What a beautiful library. Certainly in the top of the country. Which ones could be considered nicer than this? The decision to put it in its location was the best option.
Calgary and arguably Vancouver. Halifax is nice, but it's small to the point it could be a very nice local branch in any of the big six largest cities. Saskatoon is building a very nice one, but like Halifax, it's on the small side. Winnipeg is also nice, but doesn't compare to Ottawa's. Don't think we have any other main branch municipal library that stands out (other than Edmonton's in the worst possible way).
Are they going to maintain the wood so it stays that colour? I found it disappointing to see the wood on the stadium at TD Place becoming all grey
Fwiw, that was the intention at Lansdowne. Not sure what the thought process is for the library.

I'm pretty sure Adisoke will be tied with Calgary for me when it's finished. I've spent a lot of time at the Calgary branch, and it's my current #1. Vancouver was very impressive as well, definitely my #2. Grand Bibliotheque is the #3 I have visited. I'm sure it would lose a spot if I visited Halifax.

The Grande Bibliothèque is certainly not a bad looking building, but it's not at the same level as Calgary, Vancouver and Ottawa. It doesn't stand out as a landmark.

I was just looking at my Google Earth and laughing to myself about the hundreds of times I've heard 'Why didn't they build the Library downtown, they should have built it Downtown, blah blah blah.

Meanwhile, in the near future we'll see (I think) 2 escarpment lots, the OCH lot which could hold a couple of towers, and the Good Companions lot which can maybe hold two, all developed, and that's in addition to what's already u/c and proposed. The library couldn't be in a better spot, in my opinion. Surrounded by density on three sides, on the O-Train, and with an epic but underused park in front of it that will someday be a jewel in what will be the literal geographical centre of what will be considered 'Downtown' in a few years.

Edit: I forgot that Pindigin Park on the bottom left is slated for high rise as well.

As for the park, it would nice if they got rid of the redundant pathway and made a flat grass hilltop area under the trees, it will be an epic chill spot in the future when the park gets busy. They should also get rid of the almost never used connection from Commissioner to Wellington and renature it.

I think I remember hoping for a downtown location like the Alterna Savings land the City was considering, and a bit of an internal debate of having the library within the grid near the CBD or a site where it would stand out on its own. Turns out Watson knew what he was doing, but failed to explain his vision correctly. This was a brilliant move.

Bonus: the Alterna Savings site is today Relevé and the Renaissance.

With that said, I think it would be worth opening a branch of the library in Centretown, maybe in Brigil's Catherine project or a residential podium between Metcalfe and Elgin. I used to think City Hall would be a good spot, but less so now with Sutcliffe's airport security.

That section is planned to be developed (the top portion) if you look at the NCC plan for that area. I think it was townhouses or something. There are posts about it - will try to find and update w/ links.
