Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Fear not, all. This NCC announcement is much more positive than you think. The NCC has banned shallow tunnels along its riverfront lands, but in return it is offering the city unconditional use of Rochester Field. A new alignment using Rochester Field to get down to Richmond, then a shallow cut...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

It will be a very long time, if ever, before the Chapman Mills-Riverview BRT corridor needs to be converted to LRT. Heck it doesn't really even need BRT at this point. It would have functioned fine as a regular mixed traffic bus route for at least the next 10 years. Case in point, this corridor...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

It is Ottawa's first in-median BRT. And it's the start of a series of them that are scheduled to be built over the next 10 years. One on Baseline (from Baseline Station to the Southeast Transitway), and another on March Road (from the 417 up to the business park).

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

The Confederation Line tunnel is extremely shallow. Where this incident happened, the roof of the tunnel is only five metres below the street. Normally, tunnels that shallow (like the original Yonge subway) are dug cut and cover. Ottawa is able to dig a shallow bored tunnel only because of its...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

A new status update on the Confederation Line showing the specific timing of all project components in 2014. Among the interesting highlights is that Hurdman station appears to start construction in November, 3 months before the original schedule. So far its looking good for a possible early...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

The O-Train is less than ideal, but the cost of electrifying & double-tracking it is really high--it would drive the cost of Phase 2 up from $3B up to about $4.1B. With the $1.4B the city is already borrowing for its share of Phase 2 plus a bunch of BRT projects, its getting close to its maximum...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Yep. It's for all intents and purposes a subway system.

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Ottawa LRT will be 4 cars, at least for peak trains. Shorter trains may be used off-peak. Here's more info on Ottawa's chosen vehicle, the Alstom Citadis Spirit. http://www.alstom.com/Global/US/Resources/Documents/Brochure_Citadis%20Spirit.pdf The vehicle is actually a new line of Citadis...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Yep. Montreal chose to go with narrow, long cars rather than Toronto's wide and short ones. This allows Montreal's metro to have both directions in the same tunnel as opposed to Toronto's subway which needs two tunnels.
