Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Same reason why Waterloo isn't using PRESTO cards. They had a competitive bid, and someone else won. The Flexity Freedom wouldn't have even been allowed to bid for Ottawa's LRT because it didn't meet the speed requirement. One of Ottawa's posted contract requirements, was that the trains used...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

The city uses light-rail vehicles so that future suburban extensions can run on street if necessary. However, all such extensions are not planned until the distant future (the city's immediate expansion plans are all grade-separated). Another factor is lower capacity, as well as turns--some of...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Yep. This project is essentially a subway/metro using LRT technology. It's interesting just how varied LRT is. You can have anything from Toronto's streetcars which are essentially local buses on tracks, all the way up to the Confederation Line which is functionally a subway.

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

^ Absolutely no idea on Sandy Hill. My sources are the construction website + OC Transpo reports (the only thing they've released that isn't on the construction website is bus detour plan info) + the odd info scrap I get from a friend of mine who works for Scotiabank as a secretary for some guy...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Construction update was given yesterday. They're WAY ahead of schedule on the tunnel. The western roadheader has reached Lyon station and is now beginning to mine out the platforms. Central roadheader is supposed to reach Parliament station within the next week. They're past the 20% mark now! At...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

I have no idea. It's just something I heard way back in 2008-ish when the plan was started.

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

I did hear that the Confederation Line is being built to enable short-turns at Hurdman, but that was years ago before design started and I don't know if that carried through the process. In any case, short turns between Tremblay & St-Laurent are definitely possible using the MSF spur. I agree...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Yep. It will consist of 3 separate projects done simultaneously to begin construction in 2018 (when phase 1 completes) and to be in service by 2023: 1) Extending Confederation Line west from Tunney's Pasture to Baseline with a spur to Bayshore. From Tunney's, the route will follow the existing...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

O-Train extension is happening as part of Phase 2. The TMP calls for the Baseline BRT as well as the Kanata North BRT to be fully funded by the city so they can be done whenever. The EA for Kanata North is ongoing, Baseline has actually never started. Both are scheduled for the 2020s I believe...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Wynne & Murray have just confirmed that Ottawa gets its Phase 2 funding for the Confederation Line!!! Now all we need is the federal money, and approval for using NCC land.

^ Looks intense! Also excavation of Lyon station is beginning soon. The roadheader is projected to arrive there by the end of the month.

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

From my understanding of the schedule, a 'demo' opening between the underground stations is quite feasible on July 1, 2017 if they make good time, but a full system opening is much more difficult. The schedule calls for the downtown tunnel to be more or less finished by summer 2017 with...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

Tunneling is back on at the eastern portal! They're apparently ahead of schedule even with this holdup. The cause of the sinkhole was determined to be an area of soil that, at some point in history, had been excavated but then filled in with loose dirt. It was so localized that it couldn't have...

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

My understanding is that RTG must get the contract for any new vehicles an extension necessitates, but the tracks & stations for new extensions go to tender.

Ottawa Confederation Line LRT (City of Ottawa, U/C)

I've started a petition to try and get the NCC to accept the Richmond Underground line. Even the NCC has been known to bow down to public pressure before. https://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/national-capital-commission-stop-the-ncc-from-obstructing-the-western-lrt-project
